CHAPTER SIXTEEN

I shifted a small step toward the mind I felt, knowing the handler was staying just out of reach. She was here, which meant this was yet another learning opportunity for her.

Although I wanted to know who she was, I once again had to resist the temptation to fly off in pursuit of her by myself. Right now, my friends needed me. This fight was too thick and difficult for me to leave, but I wanted to. I wanted to run after her and cut her down to stop the threat before she learned too much and grew too smart.

However, when I looked around at my friends and the battlefield, I knew I couldn’t go anywhere. They needed me, and I was stuck here.

But the next time I sensed her, I was going to run after her. I couldn’t let this go on much longer.

The fight shifted again, almost as if her presence brought new waves of minions. More flying lizards came into the air, but that only led to Jace herding them toward the castle walls and our soldiers using the serum on them.

The minions on the ground also finally began to thin, no more shadow snappers running through the gaps between shadow catchers. It was a good sign, but I wasn’t about to shift and assume the worst was over.

As there were fewer shadow catchers and we dispatched them faster, we were able to press out a little. I was aware of how much the whole wall and the dragons behind us needed a break, so we only moved a little farther forward and instead spread out.

Bit by bit, we worked our way into a line. Now and then, we had a flying lizard drop out of the sky, sedated and possibly rescuable. Whenever that happened, we tried to gently catch them and ease them down, but more often than not, they caught us by surprise. After that, a gryphon would land, take them up and carry them away.

Once more, we broke the back of the corrupted army and began to push our line forward and farther out from the wall. At the same time, more of Jace’s team came to land, the soldiers and gryphons able to handle what remained in the sky.

It was progress, and I felt like we could have kept fighting a lot harder. Some of us had taken injuries, and I had a few fresh scratches. We still had plenty of magic batteries, and the soldiers had ammo and serum, so we could push beyond.

Doing so wasn’t necessarily the smartest move, however. We didn’t have a strategy behind it. We couldn’t keep the land without a plan to do so. And either way, we had done what we came here to do. We’d stopped the fortress from being overwhelmed.

“We should get back to the castle and figure out our next move,” Ranoctil said when there was a gap in enemies, and he could stop. He was panting, his cloak was in tatters,
